There are certain pets which we often carry with us in the car. These are normally dogs. However, sometimes we also travel with smaller pets, perhaps if we are moving house of on a journey to the vets. It is important to make sure that the animals are properly secured in the car for both their and your safety.

A small animal should be placed in a suitable animal carrier which should be securely fastened. It would certainly not be sensible to let them be loose in the car as not only may they get lost, they may be very distracting to the driver or even get under the brake pedal. It may seem like a good idea to maybe have someone hold the animal in their lap, perhaps because the animal does not like being in an animal carrier. It could end up with dire consequences.

A dog can be quite a different matter. They come in so many sizes that there is not a carrier to really suit them, but there are other solutions. The safest way to carry a dog in the car is to have them in the back of an estate car behind an animal safety barrier. If you have no barrier then you can buy a special harness so that the dog is strapped down. It may seem a bit mean to exclude the dog from the main part of the car or to tie them down, however, it could save all of your lives. If you had to brake quickly then a lose dog could fly through the car and possibly kill one of the passengers or the driver and of course the animal would not survive either. It is worth being careful for the protection of all of you and your family.
